The Best Shoes for Disney World

A park day is eight to ten miles on hard pavement, most of it in the Florida sun, with a few hours of standing in queues on top. The right shoes are the difference between day four feeling like day one and spending it looking for a bench.

Hours on your feet, park by park

Every bar is one park day, as tall as the park is open and shaded by the expected crowd. A long day means more miles, a busy day means more standing in queues, and both are what wear a shoe down. Tap a day for the shoe call.

What to look for

Four things a park shoe needs

Brand matters less than these. Any pair that gets all four right and has ten miles already on it will carry you through a week.

1 2 3 4
  1. 1

    A thick, soft midsole

Disney parks are concrete and asphalt edge to edge. Cushion under the heel and forefoot is what keeps the afternoon from aching, and it matters most in a long queue.

  2. 2

    Room in the toe box

Feet swell in the heat and over a long day. A thumb's width at the toe and space to spread keeps the late miles free of rubs and black toenails.

  3. 3

    A mesh upper that breathes

Hot, damp feet blister faster. Mesh lets them breathe on a 90 degree afternoon and dries far quicker after a storm than leather or canvas.

  4. 4

    A heel that holds

A firm heel stops the foot sliding with every step, and sliding is where most heel blisters start. If your heel lifts in the store, it will lift ten thousand times in the park.

The shoe bag

Six picks that earn their place

Two pairs to rotate, one for the wet, and the small things that save a day.

  1. The max cushion pick

    Hoka Clifton

A thick, light midsole that takes the edge off ten miles of concrete. The one to wear on the longest days, from rope drop at Magic Kingdom to the last fireworks.

  2. The all day trainer

    Brooks Ghost

Soft without feeling squishy, with a roomy toe box for feet that swell in the heat. EPCOT's World Showcase loop is well over a mile, and it never stops feeling good.

  3. The light second pair

    Skechers GO WALK

Slips off at airport security and on the plane, weighs almost nothing in the bag, and gives the main pair a day off. Best for a shorter park day or a resort and Disney Springs day.

  4. The water ride sandal

    Teva Hurricane XLT2

Three straps keep it on through Kali River Rapids and a summer downpour, the sole grips wet pavement, and it dries in an hour. A real walking sandal, not a flip flop.

  5. The socks

    Feetures Elite Light Cushion Socks

Moisture wicking with a seamless toe, which matters more than the shoe on a 90 degree afternoon. Pack one pair per park day plus a spare for the bag.

  6. The fix

    Band-Aid Hydro Seal Blister Cushions

The moment a heel starts to feel hot, one of these goes on and the day carries on. Small enough to live in a pocket, and worth more than any shoe on this list when you need it.

Sandals and rainy days

When sandals earn the bag space

Sneakers do the walking all year. From June through September Orlando sees a storm most afternoons, and a soaked pair of sneakers will still be damp the next morning. Those are the months a strapped sport sandal comes along.

Kali River Rapids

Animal Kingdom

The one that soaks you to the ankles. Ride in sandals, or put your sneakers in the raft's center bin and still expect damp socks.

Tiana's Bayou Adventure

Magic Kingdom

A splash rather than a soaking, but the front row can fill a shoe. Sandals on a hot day make the walk to the next ride far nicer.

Splash pads and fountains

Every park

Casey Jr. Splash 'N' Soak Station and the EPCOT fountains pull kids in on a hot afternoon. A sandal day saves a squelchy walk back.

The afternoon storm

June to September

Storms roll through, pour for half an hour and leave puddles everywhere. Change into the sandals, put the sneakers in a bag, and let them dry overnight.

Heading to a water park? Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach have hot pavement and wet stairs, so wear a water shoe or sandal there. Which water park to pick.

Before the trip

Break them in, four weeks out

New shoes in the parks are the most common reason a good trip ends with a limp. Put in your arrival date and the plan fills in the dates.

  1. Four weeks out Tue Oct 27

    Buy them

New shoes, or a fresh pair of the model you already love. Foam flattens after a few hundred miles, so a pair that has done a year of school runs is not the pair for the trip.

  2. Three weeks out Tue Nov 3

    Wear them everywhere

Errands, the office, the dog walk. A few hours a day is enough to find any seam that rubs while there is still time to swap them.

  3. Two weeks out Tue Nov 10

    Go long

Walk five or six miles in one go, in the socks you are packing. If anything gets hot or rubs, tape it now and try again in a day or two.

  4. One week out Tue Nov 17

    The dress rehearsal

A full day on your feet, ten thousand steps or more, in the exact shoes, socks and insoles. If they pass this, they are ready for the parks.

  5. Trip day Tue Nov 24

    Rotate two pairs

Wear one pair and pack the second. Swapping each day lets the foam recover and gives a wet pair a full day to dry.

Save your feet before you start

The shortest walk of the day is the one you never take. A hotel on the monorail, the Skyliner or the walking path to EPCOT can save a mile or more of steps every day.

Crowds and hours

Calmer days are easier on your feet

Long queues are where feet hurt most, because standing still loads the same spots for an hour at a time. A lighter day means more walking and less standing, and that is what a good pair of shoes is built for. Here are the calmest days ahead in November.

Questions

Disney World shoes, answered

What are the best shoes for Disney World?

Cushioned walking or running shoes that you have already broken in. A full park day is eight to ten miles on hard pavement, often 20,000 steps or more, so cushion and a good fit matter more than brand. Popular picks are the Hoka Clifton and the Brooks Ghost, with a light second pair like Skechers GO WALK to rotate.

How many steps do you walk at Disney World in a day?

Most visitors log 15,000 to 25,000 steps on a full park day, which is roughly eight to ten miles. A park hopper day or a long EPCOT day around World Showcase can push past that.

Should I wear sandals at Disney World?

Wear sneakers for the walking and pack sandals for the wet parts. A strapped sport sandal is great for Kali River Rapids, the water parks and a summer storm, and from June to September it earns its space in the bag. Flip flops give no support for ten miles and are the wrong shoe for a whole day.

How long does it take to break in shoes for Disney World?

Give it three to four weeks. Wear the new pair every day for a week or two, take at least one long walk of five or six miles, then do a full day of ten thousand steps or more about a week before the trip. If they pass that, they are ready.

Should I bring two pairs of shoes to Disney World?

Yes. Rotating two pairs lets each one recover between park days, and in Orlando's humidity a pair soaked by rain or a water ride will not be dry by the next morning. Bring both broken in, never one new pair as a backup.

Can you wear Crocs or flip flops at Disney World?

You can, but for a full park day most people regret it. They are fine for the pool, the water parks and a resort evening. For the parks themselves, cushioned sneakers with a sport sandal in the bag will carry you much further.
