When the lines build in each park

Over a whole day the two parks run close, 25 minutes a ride at Disneyland and 27 at California Adventure. What differs is when. Until mid afternoon Disneyland's lines run a little longer. From about 2 PM California Adventure pulls ahead, and near 7 PM it runs 6 minutes a ride longer, as hoppers arrive for dinner and World of Color.

The hopper move the lines point to. Start in California Adventure, cross to Disneyland in the afternoon, and stay there into the night. Disneyland usually runs until 11 PM, while California Adventure is at its busiest.

Which park to do first, and is a Park Hopper worth it

Do Disneyland first. It has more to see, and its rides run earlier and later, so it rewards the fuller day. If you have two days, give each park its own day. If you have one day and want both, buy the Park Hopper. You can hop at any time of day as long as the second park has room, and the walk between the two gates takes a few minutes, so a morning in one park and an evening in the other is easy. The lines favor a California Adventure morning and a Disneyland night.

A 1 day ticket is the same price for either park on a given date, from $104 to $224 before tax depending on the date. A Park Hopper costs extra, so it pays off only if you will ride enough in the second park. For most one day visitors with young kids, one park done well beats two done in a hurry.

Food, drinks and the night show

Drinks go to California Adventure. It pours beer, wine and cocktails all over the park, from Cars Land to Pixar Pier. Disneyland pours only at a few sit down spots, Oga's Cantina, Blue Bayou, Cafe Orleans, Carnation Cafe and River Belle Terrace, and drinks stay at the table. Rank the menus yourself with every Disneyland restaurant and every California Adventure restaurant, or skip the gate for Downtown Disney.

Nights are a draw. Disneyland stays open later and ends many nights with fireworks over the castle and Fantasmic on the Rivers of America. California Adventure closes most nights with World of Color, a water and light show on Paradise Bay. With a hopper, you can see both on the same night.
