What to wear to Universal Studios
Three rides that soak you on purpose, coasters that take everything out of your pockets, and a Florida sky that storms on a schedule. Here is the outfit that handles all three at Universal Orlando.

The fever breaks, slowly, and costumes come out after dark
A family walks off Popeye and Bluto's Bilge-Rat Barges at 11 am wet to the socks, laughing, and in denim. By 2 pm the jeans are still wet, the VelociCoaster line just asked for every last thing in their pockets, and the afternoon storm is building over Hogsmeade. Nothing went wrong. Universal simply asks more of an outfit than most theme parks do, and a few small choices made at home decide whether the day feels easy or soggy.

The soak meter
How wet each ride gets you
The water rides cluster at Islands of Adventure, and two of them leave nobody dry. Ride them in the hottest stretch of the afternoon and the soak turns into air conditioning.
-
Islands of Adventure
Popeye and Bluto's Bilge-Rat Barges
Soaked through
A round raft that spins under waterfalls, water cannons fired by other guests, and a car wash tunnel. Nobody comes off dry, and the person who faces the falls comes off wet to the socks.
-
Islands of Adventure
Dudley Do-Right's Ripsaw Falls
Soaked through
The log flume ends with a drop that dives below the water line. The front seats take a wave across the lap, and the back seats are only a little luckier.
-
Islands of Adventure
Jurassic Park River Adventure
Wet
A calm boat ride until the final plunge. Most riders get a solid splash on the drop, and the front row gets the most of it.
-
Universal Studios Florida
Splash zones on Universal Studios Florida
Damp
The headliners here are mostly dry. The few sprays and splash areas leave you damp at worst, so the poncho can stay in the bag unless it rains.
-
Epic Universe
Epic Universe
Damp
No true water ride in the lineup. The heat and the walk are the challenge here, not the splash.
The soak plan
Wear synthetic fabric that dries on the walk, not cotton or denim. Pull the poncho on for the raft if you want the afternoon dry, and wrap shoes in a plastic bag or go in sandals that strap on, then switch back to sneakers. Body dryers near the water rides run a few dollars and take the worst of it off in a couple of minutes.
Loose items
The locker rules, ride by ride
Universal is strict about loose items. Many headliners send bags to a locker before you board, and two coasters scan every rider. What you wear decides how long each stop takes.
- Metal detector Nothing in your pockets, not even a phone or keys.
- Free locker Bags and loose items stay behind, free for a set time tied to the wait.
- Paid locker The water rides charge for a dry locker, or ride with a waterproof pouch.
The free lockers sit at each ride entrance, and the free time runs a little longer than the posted wait, so you can ride and come back without paying. Stay over that window and the locker starts charging. Two habits keep every stop short. Carry one small bag instead of a big backpack, and wear shorts or a skirt with zip pockets so a phone and a card can stay on you for the rides that allow it. Hats and sunglasses come off for every coaster, so a hat that folds flat into a pocket is worth more here than at Disney World.
If speed matters more than money, the Universal Express Pass guide covers which rides it skips and when it pays off. And before you load the bag, check the Epic Universe height requirements for every rider in the group.
Florida weather
Dress for the month you are going
Universal shares Orlando's weather with Disney World, mild and dry from November to April, hot and stormy from June to September. Afternoon highs and night lows by month, with the storm season in blue.
Bottom row, average rain days in the month.
October at Universal
The fever breaks, slowly, and costumes come out after dark
October is two months wearing one name. The first half is September lite, mid eighties with a few leftover storms, and the back half is the payoff, dry air, low eighties, and the first evenings that feel gentle since April. It is also the one stretch when adults get to wear actual costumes, at the ticketed Halloween parties, where the daytime costume rule steps aside.
The one thing people forget The costume, if you are doing a party night, checked against the party rules before you pack it.
Every Orlando month, act by actA Universal day, hour by hour

The storm and the cold
From June through September a thunderstorm builds most afternoons, usually somewhere between about 2 and 6, and the outdoor coasters pause while lightning is close. VelociCoaster, the Hulk and Hagrid's all wait it out, so a storm hour is an indoor hour. Gringotts, the Mummy, Forbidden Journey and the shows keep running. A poncho beats an umbrella in the narrow Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade crowds, and it doubles as the raft plan.
Waits out the lightning

- The Incredible Hulk Coaster
- Hagrid's Motorbike Adventure
- The water rides
Your storm hour
- Escape from Gringotts
- Revenge of the Mummy
- Forbidden Journey
- The indoor shows
- Lunch in the air conditioning
The other cold is indoors. The queues for Gringotts and Forbidden Journey run long and air conditioned, which feels wonderful for five minutes in a wet shirt and chilly for the next twenty. One thin layer in the bag fixes it. From December through February that layer turns into a real jacket, because mornings at the gate can open in the forties.
Shoes and the walk
A two park day at Universal covers a lot of ground, from the CityWalk garages to the far end of Islands of Adventure and back through Diagon Alley. Closed, cushioned sneakers that are already broken in and tied snugly are the call, because loose sandals and slides can come off on the coasters and have no business on a ten mile day. On a water ride day, a spare pair of socks in a zip top bag is the cheapest comfort upgrade you can pack. The pairs that hold up are in our best theme park shoes guide, and they work just as well here.
The dress code
Universal's rules are light. Shirts and shoes are required, and clothing with offensive words or images can be turned away. Teens and adults cannot wear full costumes or masks on a regular day, and Halloween Horror Nights bans costumes and masks for everyone. Character colors in regular clothes are welcome every day, and Hogwarts house robes are sold in the parks and worn all over the Wizarding World, though in July a robe is a commitment.

The questions people ask
What should I wear to Universal Studios?
Quick dry clothes, broken in sneakers that tie on, a packable poncho, and pockets that zip. Universal is a Florida park, so the weather runs hot and humid with a storm most summer afternoons, and two Universal habits change the outfit. The Islands of Adventure water rides soak you on purpose, and the big rides send loose items to a locker, so the less you carry, the faster every ride goes.
Will I get wet on the rides at Universal Orlando?
On three of them, yes. Popeye and Bluto's Bilge-Rat Barges and Dudley Do-Right's Ripsaw Falls at Islands of Adventure soak most riders through, and Jurassic Park River Adventure ends with a splash on the final drop. Universal Studios Florida and Epic Universe have no true water ride, so a dry day is easy there. Wear quick dry fabric and ride the soakers in the hottest part of the afternoon.
Do you have to put your bag in a locker at Universal?
On many of the big rides, yes. The Harry Potter rides, Hagrid's, Revenge of the Mummy and the Epic Universe headliners send bags and loose items to free lockers at the ride entrance, free for a set time tied to the wait. VelociCoaster and the Hulk go further and run a metal detector, so nothing can be in your pockets at all. The lockers at the water rides charge a fee.
Can you bring your phone on VelociCoaster?
No. VelociCoaster and The Incredible Hulk Coaster check riders with a metal detector, and phones, keys, wallets and anything else in your pockets go into the free lockers first. Plan for a quick stop at the locker before you join the line.
What should I wear on Bilge-Rat Barges and Ripsaw Falls?
Clothes that dry fast and shoes you do not mind soaking, or a poncho over the top and a plastic bag over your shoes. Cotton and denim stay wet for hours, while a synthetic tee and quick dry shorts dry on the walk to the next ride. Put the phone in a waterproof pouch or the ride lockers.
Can you wear a costume to Universal Orlando?
Not a full costume or mask on a regular day if you are a teen or adult, and Halloween Horror Nights bans costumes and masks entirely. Character colors in regular clothes are welcome any day, and Hogwarts house robes are sold in the parks and worn all over the Wizarding World.
What shoes should I wear to Universal Studios?
Closed, cushioned sneakers that are already broken in and tie snugly. A day across two Universal parks runs well past ten miles, and loose sandals or slides can come off on the coasters. On a water ride day, a spare pair of socks in a zip top bag is the cheapest comfort upgrade you can pack.
Is Universal Orlando hotter than Disney World?
It is the same Orlando weather, but it can feel hotter. The parks are more compact with more open pavement and less shade in the long outdoor queues, and the walk between Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure is all sun. Light colors, a hat and a cooling towel do more here than you would expect.
So dress for the raft, the locker and the storm. Fabric that dries on the walk, sneakers that stay tied, a poncho in the bag and pockets that zip. Do that and the soak on Bilge-Rat Barges is the best ten minutes of a hot afternoon instead of the reason you head back to the hotel.
