The Universal Orlando Packing List
A Universal bag has three tests a Disney bag never sees. The ride lockers, the water rides that soak you on purpose, and the Florida storm at three in the afternoon. Pack small, seal the phone, bring spare socks, then print a clean copy for the other suitcase.

Set the season and who is coming, tick as you pack, and print a clean copy. Ticks stay in this browser, so you can come back to it all week.

Why a Universal bag is different
Pack for the locker run
On 10 of the biggest rides a locker decides what you carry. Most send the bag to a free locker at the entrance, two scan every rider with a metal detector, and the water rides charge for a dry cubby. The smaller the bag, the faster every one of these goes.

Where everything rides
- In the sealed pouchPhone, card and room key. It rides the water rides with you and is the one thing to grab at a locker.
- In the small bagBattery, sunscreen, poncho, spare socks and the bottle. One zip, one locker, done.
- In your pocketsNothing, on the two scanner coasters. Everywhere else, only what zips shut.
Water rides
The soak meter
Islands of Adventure has the wettest rides in Orlando, and they soak you on purpose. Here is how wet each one gets, and why the spare socks earn their place. In October, ride the soakers mid afternoon and you are dry in an hour.
-
Popeye and Bluto's Bilge-Rat Barges
A round raft that spins under waterfalls, water cannons fired by other guests, and a car wash tunnel. Nobody comes off dry, and the person who faces the falls comes off wet to the socks.
-
Dudley Do-Right's Ripsaw Falls
The log flume ends with a drop that dives below the water line. The front seats take a wave across the lap, and the back seats are only a little luckier.
-
Jurassic Park River Adventure
A calm boat ride until the final plunge. Most riders get a solid splash on the drop, and the front row gets the most of it.
-
Splash zones on Universal Studios Florida
The headliners here are mostly dry. The few sprays and splash areas leave you damp at worst, so the poncho can stay in the bag unless it rains.
-
Epic Universe
No true water ride in the lineup. The heat and the walk are the challenge here, not the splash.
Florida rules
The storm clock
Each bar is one hour of the park day. The taller the bar, the more often rain has fallen in that hour lately, and lately the wettest hour has been 6 pm. Keep the poncho on top of the bag, and save the indoor rides for then.
When the thunder starts
Outdoor coasters like VelociCoaster and Hagrid's pause for lightning, so a storm is the hour for Gringotts, Revenge of the Mummy and Forbidden Journey. A poncho on top of the bag means you walk there while everyone else crowds into a shop.

What to leave at home
Some of the most packed things are dead weight at Universal, and a few get stopped at the bag check.
- A big backpackIt goes in a locker on most headliners, and a big one makes every locker stop slower. A sling does the job.
- Selfie sticksNot allowed in the parks. Leave it in the hotel room.
- A full size umbrellaAwkward in the crowd and useless on a ride. A poncho covers the storm and the soakers.
- Jeans on a water ride dayDenim stays wet for hours after Ripsaw Falls. Quick dry shorts are dry by the next line.
- A costume or mask for teens and adultsNot allowed on a regular day, and never at Halloween Horror Nights. Character colors and house robes are welcome.
Questions
Universal packing, answered
What should I pack for Universal Orlando that I would not think of?
A waterproof phone pouch and the smallest bag you can live with. Most of the big rides send bags and loose items to a locker, so a small sling clears every stop in seconds, and a sealed pouch lets the phone ride the water rides with you instead of going in a paid locker. After that, a spare pair of socks in a zip top bag for the Islands of Adventure water rides, and a portable battery, because the Universal app runs your ticket, wait times and mobile order.
What should be in my Universal Orlando park bag?
Keep it small. A refillable water bottle, a portable battery and cable, a waterproof phone pouch, a poncho, sunscreen, sunglasses, blister care, a spare pair of socks and snacks if you have kids. Add a cooling towel from May to September and a packable warm layer from December to February.
Do you have to put your bag in a locker at Universal?
On many of the big rides, yes. The Harry Potter rides, Hagrid's, Revenge of the Mummy and the Epic Universe headliners like Stardust Racers send bags and loose items to free lockers at the ride entrance, free for a set time tied to the wait. The lockers at the water rides charge a fee, which a waterproof pouch lets you skip.
Which rides at Universal Orlando have metal detectors?
Only two. Jurassic World VelociCoaster and The Incredible Hulk Coaster, both at Islands of Adventure, scan riders with a metal detector, so phones, keys and anything else in your pockets go into the free lockers first. Stardust Racers, Hagrid's and the other big rides use free lockers with no metal detector.
Do I need a poncho at Universal Orlando?
Yes, most of the year. Summer brings an afternoon storm most days from June to September, and Popeye and Bluto's Bilge-Rat Barges and Dudley Do-Right's Ripsaw Falls soak riders in any month. One poncho from home covers both and costs far less than one in the park.
Can I bring food and water into Universal Orlando?
Yes. Snacks and drinks for the day are fine, and a refillable bottle is the best thing to carry, since quick service counters will pour a cup of ice water. Keep it to what fits in a small bag, because the bag goes in a locker on the big rides.
Do I need to pack differently for Epic Universe?
Only a little. Epic Universe has no true water ride, so the spare socks can stay at the hotel on an Epic day, but the heat and the walk between worlds are the challenge, and most headliners there send loose items to a free locker too. Pack the same small bag, the battery and the cooling towel.
