What to wear to Epic Universe

Five worlds, one outfit. A sunny hub with little shade, eight rides that keep your bag in a locker, and a walk out and back through every portal. Here is what to wear for all of it.

At 9 am Celestial Park is the most beautiful place in Orlando. At 2 pm it is a wide open garden in full Florida sun, and you are crossing it for the fourth time with a backpack that just spent twenty minutes in a Stardust Racers locker. Nothing went wrong. Epic Universe simply asks for a lighter, cooler outfit than you would guess, and a few choices made at home decide whether the day feels easy or long.

  • Quick dry topSun, splash and storm
  • Broken in sneakersHub and back, all day
  • A hat that foldsOff for every coaster
  • Zip pocketsFaster locker stops

World by world

What each world asks of your outfit

Two worlds are mostly sky, two are mostly indoors, and one sits in between. Spend the cool morning outside and save the indoor worlds for the hottest hours.

  1. Celestial Park

Hat, sunscreen and a cooling towel

    Open sky

The hub of the park is a huge garden of lawns, fountains and wide paths, and you cross it every time you change worlds. It is beautiful and it is mostly sun, so this is where a Florida afternoon hits hardest.

    Stardust Racers Constellation Carousel

  2. Super Nintendo World

Pockets that zip and a light bag

    Sun and shade

Busy, bright and tightly packed, with the two headline rides indoors and long outdoor stretches between the blocks. Mario Kart and Mine-Cart Madness both send loose items to a locker.

  3. Isle of Berk

Quick dry fabric for Fyre Drill

    Open sky

A Viking village on the water with a lot of open sky. Fyre Drill hands every rider a water cannon, so you leave a little wet, and Hiccup's Wing Gliders asks for empty pockets.

Hiccup's Wing Gliders Dragon Racer's Rally Fyre Drill

  4. Dark Universe

A thin layer for the cold queues

    Mostly indoors

Gothic, moody and mostly inside. The queues for Monsters Unchained and Curse of the Werewolf run long and air conditioned, which feels great for five minutes in a damp shirt and chilly after twenty.

Monsters Unchained Curse of the Werewolf

  5. Ministry of Magic

    Your storm hour, robes welcome

    Mostly indoors

A Paris street outside and a vast, cool Ministry inside. Battle at the Ministry is the long indoor wait of the day, so it is the natural place to sit out the afternoon storm.

    Battle at the Ministry

Dress for the clock

One outfit, four parts of the day

The trick at Epic is matching the world to the hour. Outside while it is cool, inside while it is hot, and back to the hub when the sun goes down.

  1. Rope drop

    Start outside

Celestial Park, then Super Nintendo World or Isle of Berk

Hat on, sunscreen on, the coolest air of the day. Ride the outdoor coasters now.

  2. 11 to 3

    Go inside

Dark Universe and the Ministry of Magic

The hottest hours. Long cold queues, so keep the thin layer in the bag.

  3. Storm hour

    Wait it out

Battle at the Ministry, Monsters Unchained or a long lunch

Poncho over the bag, and the outdoor rides pause until the lightning moves on.

  4. After dark

    Back to the hub

Celestial Park and a last lap of Stardust Racers

The lawns cool off and glow. A light layer from November to March.

Loose items

The locker rules, ride by ride

Good news first. Epic has no metal detectors, so phones and keys never have to leave a zipped pocket for a scan. The catch is that 8 rides send bags and loose items to a free locker before you board.

  • 8Locker rides
  • 3Bag rides along
  • 0Metal detectors
  • Free locker Bags, hats and loose items stay behind, free for a set time tied to the wait.
  • Rides with you A small bag goes on your lap or at your feet.

The free time runs a little longer than the posted wait, so you can ride and come back without paying, and stay over that window and the locker starts charging. Rules can shift, so follow the sign at each entrance. Two habits keep every stop short. Carry one small bag instead of a big backpack, and wear shorts or a skirt with zip pockets so a phone and a card can stay on you. If you are splitting the trip with Islands of Adventure, that is where the only metal detectors are, on VelociCoaster and the Hulk, and our Universal Studios outfit guide covers them.

The walk

Hub and spoke, out and back

Every world sits behind its own portal off Celestial Park, and none of them connect. Visit all four and you pass through a portal at least eight times, crossing the sunny hub between each one.

Not to scale. The four portals, out and back from the hub.

That layout is why the shoes matter more here than the size of the park suggests. A rope drop to close day easily covers many miles, much of it on open paths. Closed, cushioned sneakers that are already broken in and tied snugly are the call, because sandals and slides can come off on the coasters and wear thin on a long day. Wicking socks and a spare pair in a zip top bag are the cheapest comfort upgrade you can pack. The pairs that hold up are in our best theme park shoes guide, and they work just as well at Epic.

Florida weather

Dress for the month you are going

Epic shares Orlando's weather with the rest of the city, mild and dry from November to April, hot and stormy from June to September. Afternoon highs and night lows by month, with the storm season in blue.

October still runs warm with a few late storms, and November turns dry and gentle. Nights in Celestial Park are the best of the year, and the first cool evenings arrive in November.

The one thing people forget A light layer for after dark, when the hub is at its prettiest and coolest.

The storm and the cold

From June through September a thunderstorm builds most afternoons, usually somewhere between about 2 and 6, and the outdoor coasters pause while lightning is close. A poncho beats an umbrella in the Super Nintendo World crowds, and the indoor worlds make a natural storm hour.

  • Hiccup's Wing Gliders
  • Dragon Racer's Rally
  • Fyre Drill

Your storm hour

  • Battle at the Ministry
  • Monsters Unchained
  • Mario Kart
  • Lunch in the air conditioning

The other cold is indoors. The long air conditioned queues in Dark Universe and the Ministry feel wonderful for five minutes in a damp shirt and chilly for the next twenty, so one thin layer belongs in the bag. From December through February that layer turns into a real jacket, because mornings at the gate can open in the forties.

The dress code

Epic follows the same light rules as the rest of Universal Orlando. Shirts and shoes are required, and clothing with offensive words or images can be turned away. Teens and adults cannot wear full costumes or masks on a regular day, but character colors in regular clothes are welcome. House robes fit right in at the Ministry of Magic, though in July a robe is a commitment, and Super Nintendo World is full of Mario hats and Power-Up Bands. Before you go, check the Epic Universe height requirements for every rider in the group.

The park bag

Six things worth buying before you fly

Each one solves an Epic problem, the sun in the hub, the locker line or the long walk, and each costs less at home than inside the gates.

  1. The Celestial Park plan

    Mission Cooling Towel

    May to October afternoons

Soak it at a fountain, wring it out and wear it on your neck. The long sunny crossings of the hub are where it earns its spot in the bag.

  2. The packable hat

    Columbia Bora Bora Booney Hat

    Every park day

A wide brim for the open lawns that folds flat into a pocket when the coaster asks for it, so the hat never has to go in a locker on its own.

    See it on Amazon
  3. The small bag

    Osprey Daylite Waist Pack

    Every locker ride

Eight Epic rides send bags to a locker. A small bag clears each stop in seconds and fits the smallest locker, while a big backpack slows every one.

    See it on Amazon
  4. The uniform

    Under Armour Tech 2.0 T-Shirt

    Every park day

Wicking fabric dries after a Fyre Drill splash or a downpour by the time you reach the next portal, and it handles a Florida afternoon far better than cotton.

    See it on Amazon
  5. The storm plan

    Frogg Toggs Ultra-Lite2 Poncho

    June to September

The afternoon storm is the wettest thing at Epic. It folds into a pocket and costs a fraction of a park poncho.

    See it on Amazon
  6. The long walk plan

    Balega Hidden Comfort Running Socks

    Every park day

Cushioned, wicking socks are the cheapest fix for a day of hub and back walks, and a spare pair in a zip top bag rescues feet after a storm.

The questions people ask

What should I wear to Epic Universe?

Light, quick dry clothes, broken in sneakers that tie on, a hat that folds flat, and pockets that zip. Epic Universe is a Florida park, so it runs hot and humid with a storm most summer afternoons. Celestial Park has little shade, most of the big rides send loose items to a free locker, and the walk between worlds adds up, so dress light and carry less.

Are there metal detectors on the rides at Epic Universe?

No. At Universal Orlando only Jurassic World VelociCoaster and The Incredible Hulk Coaster scan riders, and both are at Islands of Adventure. At Epic, Stardust Racers, Battle at the Ministry, Monsters Unchained, Hiccup's Wing Gliders and the other big rides use free lockers at the entrance instead.

Do you have to use a locker at Epic Universe?

On most of the headliners, yes. Bags and loose items go into a free locker before Stardust Racers, the Ministry, Monsters Unchained, Curse of the Werewolf, Hiccup's Wing Gliders, Dragon Racer's Rally, Mine-Cart Madness and Mario Kart. The locker is free for a set time tied to the posted wait. A small bag and zip pockets make every stop faster.

Will I get wet at Epic Universe?

Barely. Epic has no log flume or raft ride. Fyre Drill on the Isle of Berk hands every rider a water cannon, so expect a few splashes, and the fountains in Celestial Park cool you off if you want them. The real water is the summer afternoon storm, so a packable poncho still earns its place.

Is Epic Universe hot?

Yes, and it can feel hotter than the other Orlando parks. Celestial Park is a wide open garden at the center of everything, and you cross it every time you change worlds. Plan the hottest hours for the indoor worlds, Dark Universe and the Ministry of Magic, and wear a hat, light colors and a cooling towel.

How much walking is Epic Universe?

A lot. Every world sits behind its own portal off Celestial Park, so you walk out to a world and back to the hub before the next one. A rope drop to close day easily covers many miles. Wear cushioned sneakers you have already broken in, not new shoes or sandals.

Can I wear a costume or robes to Epic Universe?

Teens and adults cannot wear full costumes or masks on a regular day, but character colors in regular clothes are welcome. House robes are sold in the parks and fit right in at the Ministry of Magic, and Super Nintendo World is full of Mario hats and Power-Up Bands.

Can I wear my hat and sunglasses on Stardust Racers?

No. Hats, loose sunglasses and anything else that could fly off go into the free locker before you board. A hat that folds flat into a pocket or a bag saves you a choice at every coaster.

So dress for the hub, the locker and the long walk. Fabric that breathes, sneakers that stay tied, a hat that folds and pockets that zip. Do that and the fourth crossing of Celestial Park at sunset is the best walk of the day instead of the reason you head back to the hotel.
